Visiting the Dartington Campus
Please check where your course will be held as we use various locations across the Dartington Campus.
By train: Totnes is on the Inter-city train network. London Paddington (approx. 3 hours; Birmingham 3.5 hours; Plymouth 30 mins. It is advisable to purchase tickets before your day of travel.
By bike: There is a cycle path that runs from the South Devon Railway car park at Totnes Train Station. When the path reaches the drive into the Dartington estate, follow the drive up the hill to the main estate.
On foot: Pedestrians can use the cycle path which takes about 40 minutes.
By taxis: From Totnes Station to the Arts School costs between £8 and £10 (slightly more on public holidays)
By bus: From Totnes Monday – Saturday (Except Public Holidays). Number 165 is direct but infrequent. We suggest calling Traveline on 0871 200 22 33 (high cost line) or www.traveline.info to check times.
By coach: National Express runs one coach a day direct to Totnes from London Victoria via Heathrow Airport. Journey time is about 5 hours. Phone 08717 818178 for current timetable or visit their website: www.nationalexpress.com
By car: Dartington lies a few miles south of the main A 38 Exeter to Plymouth Devon Expressway which links Exeter to the M5 and the rest of the national motorway system.
From Exeter: From the M5 take the A38 as far as the A384 Buckfastleigh turn-off and follow the signs for Totnes. After about five miles there is a roadside sign for Dartington. A little further on, turn left at Dartington Church.
From Plymouth: take the A38 as far as the A385 turn-off beyond South Brent, signposted Dartington. On reaching the mini-roundabout in Dartington (approx. 3 miles) with The Shops at Dartington in front of you, take the left exit towards Buckfastleigh and Ashburton and after about quarter of a mile turn right at Dartington Church.
International Travel
Most international planes arrive at either London Heathrow or London Gatwick airport. Some budget airlines now fly into Bristol airport, which is closer. In all cases, the quickest way to get to the Arts School is to take the train to Totnes, which is two miles away. From Heathrow Airport, there are two ways to connect with the train to Totnes:
1) By bus: (the RailAir Link ) which goes to Reading station from each terminal at Heathrow every half hour and takes about 45 minutes. At Reading take a Plymouth or Penzance-bound train. It will take about 2.5 hours..
2) By train: the Heathrow Express train goes back into London Paddington and runs approx. every 15 minutes and takes about 15 minutes. From Paddington take a Plymouth or Penzance-bound train. It takes about 3 hours. From Gatwick airport, take the train to Reading, and then proceed as outlined above. Journey time from Gatwick to Reading is about 1.5 hours.
By bus from Bristol airport (a 15 – minute journey). Trains run regularly to Totnes, and take about 1.5 hours. Trains times can be found at www.nationalrail.co.uk.
Train Tickets cost between £60 and £84 for a return journey from London, less from Bristol. Fares bought in advance are usually cheaper.
